Freight cars derail in Lassen County; no injuries

HERLONG, Calif. (AP) ” Seventeen freight cars have derailed near the Sierra Army Depot in northeastern California.

A Union Pacific spokesman says there were no injuries.

The derailment damaged up to 1,800 feet of track early Wednesday after an 83-car train headed from Marion, Ark. to Oakland, Calif. carrying mixed freight derailed, Union Pacific spokesman James Barnes said.



About half the derailed cars were carrying hazardous materials ” acid and a powder that causes air bags to deploy. But Barnes said none of it was released in the derailment.

Other freight traffic is being diverted to alternate routes while repairs are made.



Cause of the derailment is under investigation.
