Friday: Brisk northeast winds today, mild temps Saturday, Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” A strong surface high pressure system over the Great Basin will combine with an upper level low pressure system over Arizona to bring gusty northeast winds to the Tahoe Basin today.

Brisk northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph will create choppy lake conditions with high surf possible on the western shore of the lake. Stronger winds aloft will be felt along the Sierra crest with northeast winds gusting to 80 mph at times.

High temperature will reach the lower 40s this afternoon under sunny skies. Clear skies and diminishing winds overnight will allow lows to dip into the single digits to lower teens around the basin.

Higher pressure aloft will build into the area on Saturday for sunny skies, light winds and daytime temperatures warming back into the upper 40s.

A weakening frontal system is forecast to spread mostly mid and upper level clouds across the Tahoe Basin on Sunday.

Little if any precipitation is expected to reach the lower elevations with only a few flurries possible along the Sierra crest on Sunday. Thus no impact on travel expected for those returning from the holiday weekend.

Longer range forecast charts are now showing a wetter pattern developing next week with a series of colder storms to impact the area beginning Tuesday. Stay tuned to see how much snow we can expect in this developing cold pattern.
