Friends of the Truckee Library: "Books are Sweet" Winter reading program has gingerbread theme and prizes

As the snow starts to fly (or as we become increasingly impatient waiting for it to start flying), it is that time of year once again for the Truckee Library to kick off its annual Winter Reading Program for children ages 5 and up. Designed not to interfere with school projects and reading, the winter reading program is much more low-key than its summer counterpart. Participants are encouraged to read a total of five to 10 books over a three month period, which includes the Christmas/New Year’s break and Truckee’s ski/skate week. Our winter theme celebrates the yummy treats this holiday season is known for with a gingerbread village motif: “Books Are Sweet: Treat Yourself to a Good Book!”

All participants will receive a themed bookmark and reading record with stickers to track their progress. This year’s stickers are even peppermint-scented to match the season.

Sign-ups start the first week in December, and run through the end of February. In past years, when we’ve required participants to read books from a specific genre (e.g. historical fiction, fantasies, mysteries, etc.), our completion rates suffered. This year we will let the kids decide what they want to read instead. Upon completion of the program, those who reach their reading goal will be awarded with a special book of their choosing along with an invitation to an exciting after-hours party at the library.

So celebrate the season that celebrates Truckee by visiting the library to sign up for the Truckee Library’s “Books are Sweet!” winter reading program. What better way to enjoy an evening curled up by the fire than with a really good book It’s a great habit to instill in our children at a young age and an excellent antidote to their screen-intensive world of television, computers, or video games.
