Frosting on the cake

Joelle Babula, Sun News Service

Get ready to carve. It’s powder time.

“Sunday should be one of the greatest days of skiing in the Tahoe Basin in recent memory,” said Mike Pechner, a meteorologist with Golden West Meteorology in the Bay Area. “We’ve got this hard pack Sierra cement for the body of the cake and now we’re going to put the frosting on.”

And the flavor of that frosting is pure, light powder. Lots of it.

According to Pechner, dry clear weather should move in this afternoon and stick around until late Friday. Come Friday evening, however, another storm will move in dumping dry, light powder in the Tahoe Basin.

“There will be much colder air this weekend from Canada and the snow level will plummet,” Pechner said. “The snow will become very light and powdery.”

Expect temperature highs to drop from the 30s to the low 20s and upper teens this weekend.

“The lows on Monday and Tuesday will be in the single digits or zero,” Pechner said. “We’ll get a break on Tuesday, but by then, we’ll be above normal in terms of snow on the ground and total seasonal snow fall.”

According to Pechner, yesterday morning at Norden at Donner Summit, there were 66 inches of snow on the ground and 189 inches so far. Last year at this time, there was 90 inches of snow on the summit and a total of 268. Normal snow fall levels are 60 inches on the ground and 174 inches total.
