Fuel spill at Donner Lake: Cleanup ends on I-80

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Crews have completed all diesel spill-related work in the median along Interstate-80 near Donner Summit, the California Department of Fish and Game announced Friday.

All absorbent booms have been removed, and no further impacts to traffic are anticipated, the department said.

Clean-up of a smaller amount of spill-impacted soil will begin mid-July on the south side of I-80, the department said, and it will not affect traffic.

A soil removal and long-term sediment and surface water monitoring plan is forthcoming,and#8221; the department said, to be reviewed by Fish and Game, Nevada County Environmental Health Department and Regional Water Quality Control Board and a consultant.

Fish and Game and the Nevada County health department responded to the May 26 spill, which occurred when a tanker truck overturned and spilled as much as 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel along I-80 on the west side of Donner Lake.

Some of the material washed over the side of the interstate into the soil and watershed of Billy Mack and Summit creeks. The most recent water sample results show no diesel detections in Billy Mack Creek, Summit Creek or Donner Lake, DFG reports.
