Fuel spill at Donner Lake: Cleanup, lane closures continue on I-80 Monday

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Crews cleaning up soil contaminated by the May 26 diesel spill on Donner Summit will start back up on Monday.

Crews started in Tuesday on the soil in the center divide of Interstate 80, where a big rig tipped over last month, dumping about 3,000 gallons of diesel fuel on the road, in the divide and down Summit Creek into Donner Lake.

Earlier this month, after cleanup efforts brought diesel levels below detectable in the creek and lake, California Department of Fish and Game shifted focus to the soil.

Working in the center divides means closing one lane of traffic on eastbound I-80 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting again on Monday, weather permitting, according to Fish and Game.

and#8220;Removal crews are working as quickly and safely as they can,and#8221; said Hector Orozco, incident commander for the Department of Fish and Game in a press release. and#8220;We are conducting air monitoring and collecting soil samples in the area where the soil is removed to be sure we get it all.and#8221;
