Garbage, tipping fee rate hikes proposed

Staff Reports

The Placer County Board of Supervisors will vote on a proposed increase to garbage collections fees at the local landfill on Tuesday.

The rate hikes, which would account for rising cost of living and fuel expenses, are expected to increase a total of 4.1 and 4.8 percent.

The increases apply to garbage collection fees, which are administered by Tahoe Truckee Disposal Company, and fees charged at the landfill.

“It’s a pretty routine thing,” said Bill Zimmerman, solid waste program manager for Placer County. “It’s something we do every year.”

Last year’s increase was slightly more modest, said Zimmerman. Rates rose between 2 and 4 percent.

Garbage is sorted at Eastern Regional landfill on Cabin Creek Road. It is then trucked to a landfill in Lockwood, Nev. Fuel costs and an increase in charges at Lockwood also contributed to the proposed rate hike, said Zimmerman.
