General manager joins Sierra Sun

Staff reports

New Sierra Sun general manager Joe Burns doesn’t have his snow tires yet, but he’s happy to be living in the Truckee area.

Burns starts this week as the Sun’s general manager, a new position that will involve community relations and overseeing the production of the Sun.

Burns will also be serving as the advertising director for the Sierra Sun, Tahoe World and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza newspapers.

“I’m fortunate to get to come to this area,” Burns said. “The Sierra Sun is a highly respected weekly newspaper positioned for greatness.”

“I hope to unite the paper with the community,” Burns added.

“We’re very happy to have Joe join the Sierra Sun staff,” said Sierra Sun publisher Mary Jurkonis. “We hope he’ll be a liaison between the newspapers and the community and complement our already excellent staff at the Sun.”

Burns comes to Truckee from Napa, where he had been the general manager of monthly publications for the Napa Valley Register for six years. He oversaw the company’s business magazine, Hispanic publication and visitor guide.

A 1989 graduate of Fresno State College, Burns spent nine years in the real estate business before moving over to newspapers.

Burns and his two dogs are settling in to Truckee, where Burns hopes to find time for his hobbies of biking and cross-country skiing this winter. He also plans to pick up his first set of snow tires soon.
