Gifts for Good: Arts for the Schools
Arts For the Schools is a community-based arts organization that enhances our childrens education and fosters a lifelong appreciation of the creative arts.
Founded in 1984 by Terry Yagura, Arts For the Schools sought to address the decline in arts programming in North Tahoe, Truckee, and Incline schools ? one of the unintended consequences of the 1978 ratification of California’s Proposition 13 which drastically reduced educational funding statewide. Arts for the Schools aims to bring art back into the classroom and deepen its connection to the broader community.
Melanie Kauffman has worked in the nonprofit field for the past 13 years supporting nonprofits with fundraising, program management and organizational development. Since moving to Truckee in 1997, Melanie has dedicated herself to helping community organizations, working with Sierra Nevada Childrens Museum (KidZone), Tahoe Womens Services and Sierra Senior Services. Melanie joined Arts For the Schools in January 2008 as the Executive Director.
Arts For the Schools has provided access, awareness and educational experiences for students to interact with professional artists, both local and world-renown. Through our Artist-in-Residence program, three professional artists teach specialized classes in multi-disciplinary art to emphasize the link between the creative process of reading, writing and art-making. Performing Arts Workshops and Assemblies are presented at school sites in addition to our Community Performance Series.
Arts For the Schools is the only arts organization in the North Tahoe area that serves children, adults and families throughout the year. By providing high quality arts learning opportunities in local schools, and presenting internationally acclaimed performing artists to students and the larger community, Arts For the Schools strives to enrich the cultural and interactive life of the Tahoe-Truckee area.
Arts For the Schools appreciates all types of support. Online donations are now accepted at http://www.artsfortheschools.org in the following areas: Membership Program, General Support, The Terry Yagura Arts For the Schools Endowment, Sponsorship Program or Planned Giving.
Arts For the Schools volunteer opportunities include support with community performances, fundraising andamp; administrative projects.
Our goals are to strengthen core programming, increase audience attendance under the OnSTAGE Series, strengthen community partnerships and develop opportunities to reach a greater number of students.
Arts For the Schools receives only 11 percent of its funding from government agencies while our programs reach more than 4,000 students each year in 10 schools throughout the region. One way the community can support our efforts is to attend our Community Performance Series.Tickets, Season Passes and the annual holiday card designed by Cathee van Rossem St. Clair, are now available for purchase at select outlets, on-line at http://www.artsfortheschools.org, or the Arts For the Schools office in Truckee.
