Girl golfers show strong

With three matches played, the Truckee High School girls’ varsity golf team had two third place and one second place finishes to show for it.

The Wolverines are sitting solid in third place in their league and are only one point back from second place. Since the top three schools in the league go to state, head coach Mike Merriman is excited about the girls chances for a state bid.

“Things are looking real good,” Merriman said.

With what he describes as a “good mix,” Merriman’s players are shooting tough from his three seniors down to the one freshman on the team.

Junior Katy Jones shot a 109 last week and Merriman says she is improving quite steadily. Sophomore Jenny Womack shot her lowest score with a 96. Junior Katie Fischer, who is new to Truckee this year, turned in the fourth lowest score at Winnemucca with a 93. Merriman believes she still has lower scores in her for the year.

Senior Jamie Ramone and Maranda Funston are both doing well. Freshman Renee Cardinali shot a 101 last week.

“She (Cardinali) is going to be a really good player for us in the future,” Merriman said. “We’re going to see big things from her.”

“We’re doing well,” Merriman said. “We’ll continue fighting Spring Creek for the second spot.”

Merriman looks for his team to finish in the top four in the state.
