The North Tahoe and Truckee High track and field teams represented their schools well at the 2A and 3A State Championships at Damonte Ranch High School on Saturday.

Lakers were all over the 2A podium, bringing home six gold medals, three silver and eight bronze.

North Tahoe’s girls posted the best result as a unit, finishing second as a team with 98 points to Whittell’s 147. Lovelock was third with 97 points.

Freshman Carly Leininger earned one of the Lakers’ gold medals, winning the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:53.03. Second-place Chelsie Heggie of White Pine crossed the line in 5:56.3.

The Laker girls 4×800 team also won gold, racing to a blowout win over Lovelock (11:21.21) in 10:52.50.

North Tahoe’s boys placed fourth as a team with 80 points. Independence won with 132 points, followed by White Pine (112.5) and Silver Stage (81).

Individually, North Tahoe senior Ryan Blount won the 110-meter hurdles, posting a time of 16.08 to Paul Waite of Whittell’s 16.39.

Not surprisingly, junior James Laughlin blew away the field in the shot put and discus.

The North’s No. 1 seed in both events, Laughlin won the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 3.25 inches. Chris Lennon, a senior from Independence, was second with a throw of 46-02.

The competition wasn’t close in the discus, as Laughlin won with a throw of 156-03.50 to Jermaine Stephens of ROP’s 138-07.

Laughlin bettered his previous-best mark of 149-01, set at the Northern 2A Divisional Zones.

North Tahoe’s boys relay team made up of Blount, Brent Marple, Joe Erman and Michele Basile won the 4×400 in 3:35.67 to Silver Stage’s 3:39.46.

On the Truckee side, the boys team placed eighth with 45 points. Boulder City was first with 98 points, followed by Fernley (87) and Faith Lutheran (79) rounding out the top three.

Truckee’s girls finished 11th as a team with 16 points. Boulder City (99.5) placed first, Spring Creek (93) second and Pahrump Valley (91) third.

The Wolverines’ lone gold medal came in the boys 4×200 relay, which edged second-place Dayton, 1:33.19 -1:33.41.

Senior Max Salinger ran impressive races in the 800 and 1,600, finishing third in each with times of 2:04.37 and 4:47.48, respectively, while junior Micah Silver was fourth in the 800 in 2:04.82.

Truckee’s boys 4×800 team also placed third with a time of 8:26.52.
