Hanging victim found near Boca

Nevada County Sheriff’s Office officials are investigating an unusual death after discovering a body Friday, April 13 beneath Boca Bridge just northeast of Truckee.

“We received a call of a hanging death underneath Boca Bridge,” said NCSO Capt. Gary Jacobson.

The cause of death is officially undetermined. However, according to one early police report the death may have been a case of accidental autoerotic asphyxiation.

“The victim was found with ligature around his neck. He was on his knees. He could have stood up at any time if he wanted,” Capt. Jacobson said.

A toxicology report on the victim to determine whether or not alcohol or drugs were in his system was ordered, but officials don’t expect to have the result for another six weeks.

The victim, identified as Robert Norbert Hilf, 38, was originally from Grass Valley, but had been living in Las Vegas for the last 10 years.

Hilf had recently moved back to Grass Valley and was living with his parents. He was looking for work in Reno, according to police reports.

Investigators found a towel underneath the ligature, which indicates this may not have been a suicide.

No evidence of foul play was reported.

“We don’t have any reason to believe this was a homicide,” Capt. Jacobson said.

The victim’s family was notified last week.
