Hearing set for Kings Beach pedestrian death

A hearing will be held next week in the January death of a pedestrian in Kings Beach.

The hearing, set for July 24 in Tahoe City, has been rescheduled twice. The California Highway Patrol is recommending manslaughter charges for Kevin Gorchinski, who officials say ran his 1999 Honda Accord into pedestrians Linda Fernandez and Jeremy Virgo who were crossing the street on a crosswalk.

Fernandez, a Tahoma resident, died in the accident and Virgo survived with a broken ankle and other injuries, according to CHP reports.

The accident occurred at Highway 28 and Fox Street at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 8, according to reports.

Gorchinski, a Sacramento resident, was driving at or near the speed limit when the accident occurred and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the CHP.

Manslaughter charges are filed in cases where a death occurred from an incident where there was no intent to kill, or from a negligent or reckless action.
