Hearing set for new 700-home project

The ongoing dispute over development in the Martis Valley shifts Thursday to the proposed 2,177-acre Siller Ranch subdivision.

The developers of the 726-home project will go before the Placer County Planning Commission at the North Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach Thursday afternoon. The proposed gated community would include a 500-seat amphitheater, 27 holes of golf, tennis courts and swimming pools.

The Siller Ranch project has drawn strong criticism from environmental groups and Truckee town officials. They contend that traffic, water and housing pressures from the Siller Ranch development and others planned under the Martis Valley Community Plan will impact Truckee, which is in Nevada County.

Siller Ranch is expected to create 387 jobs. The issues of employee housing and affordable housing will likely be at the center of discussion Thursday.

Water quality has also been brought up by environmental groups, which note that cumulative water demand for golf courses in the area is mounting.

Siller Ranch is the second – and largest – development to go through the Placer County planning process under the recently adopted Martis Valley Community Plan.
