Help wanted to pick town manager

Residents will have their say Thursday in what qualities they want in a new town manager.

When Steve Wright, Truckee’s first and only town manager, announced last year that he was retiring, the town began the process of outlining qualifications that will be required of Truckee’s next manager and hired a search firm. But the town is still looking for input from residents on character qualities and background of the successful applicant.

On Thursday both town officials and the search firm, Bob Murray and Associates, will be at the Truckee Town Council meeting to hear what experience, education and personality traits the public expects out of the town’s new manager. The town council will then take this into consideration when they choose the successful candidate. It will likely be two to three months before a new town manager is in place.

Until then, Wright, who officially retired in November, will continue in his current capacity on a short-term contract basis. Wright is leaving to go into semi-retirement, and will work part-time around the state as a government consultant.

Truckee’s manager essentially serves as the town’s chief executive officer. The manager coordinates the department heads, is the executive director of the town’s redevelopment agency, and manages the town’s finances. The search firm plans on having a field of qualified candidates by early March, said Wright. That group of candidates could include people already employed within town, said Wright.

“It’s a wide open process at this point,” said Wright.
