Highway 89 between Tahoe City, Alpine reopened after avalanche forced closure

UPDATE: 3:15 p.m. Sunday

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. and#8212; The southbound lane of Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows Ski Resort is now open after an early afternoon avalanche interrupted traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP reports Highway 89 south is open as of 3:09 p.m. Sunday. CHP had sent multiple units to the scene, near the intersection of Alpine Meadows Road, and traffic was diverted on the highway, which connects Tahoe City and Truckee.

The incident was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday. Initial reports said one vehicle was trapped inside, but according to CHP, upon removal of the snow from the highway at about 12:47 p.m., no vehicles were located.
