Highway 89 roadwork between Squaw, Truckee under way

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. and#8212; A nine-mile, $7.2 million pavement project has begun on Highway 89 between Squaw Valley and Truckee, Caltrans announced Monday.

According to a press release, the rehabilitation project will extend the highwayand#8217;s pavement life by 10 years, restore ride quality for motorists and bicyclists, improve drainage and significantly reduce future maintenance needs.

The prime contractor for the project from the Nevada County line to Squaw Valley Road is Sierra Nevada Construction Inc., of Sparks, according to Caltrans.

Motorists can expect delays up to 20 minutes in various locations, and one-way traffic controls from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The anticipated completion date is late 2012. According to previous reports, funds from the California State Highway Operation Protection Program will be used. The project was announced in late summer 2011, and was hailed by local cyclists as a milestone for the rut-and-cut highway they said hadnand#8217;t been repaved for nearly a decade.
