Honoring Truckee’s veterans

ABHUTCHISON, Sierra Sun

Approximately 50 people gathered in frigid temperatures Saturday morning in downtown Truckee to pay witness to Truckee’s first Veteran’s Day ceremony, organized by Town of Truckee councilmember and Korean War veteran Bob Drake.

The ceremony included traditional bagpipe music, a beautiful solo of “American the Beautiful” leading into “The Star Spangled Banner” by Sharine Drake, speeches by Tahoe Forest Church pastor Mike Sampson, Vietnam medic and veteran Russ Mann, vice-mayor Don McCormack and Truckee Chapter Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) past commander Dennis Cook. Beale Air Force Base Honor Guards performed the ceremonial posting of the colors.

“I could not have been more pleased,” said Drake. “I’m almost at a loss for words. The acknowledgement of the honor and reverence of the day was beyond anything I could have dreamed of. The goal was to try to pay honor to veterans and try to make it a Truckee event. Like every community in the country, Truckee has people who have served and certainly people who have died.”

Drake considers the event successful and hopes it will carry on in years to come. Local VFW Commander Gary Thomas, a retired Navy captain, indicated the chapter would like to take over the event as an annual occurrence.

“Just what I wanted to have happen did happen,” Drake said. He said he is planning on meeting with Thomas to debrief Saturday’s ceremony.
