I-80 fixes on schedule for next spring

Construction on the first of three targeted sections of Interstate 80 near Donner Summit will begin next spring.

The California Transportation Commission has awarded the Caltrans $71 million for an approximately three-mile stretch of freeway, the first of three sections to be approved in a plan to improve road conditions over Donner Summit. The section spans from the Castle Peak rest area to the Soda Springs exit.

Caltrans will be rehabilitating what equates to 17.3 lane-miles in both directions by grinding down the old concrete and putting in new cement starting next spring, and the project is scheduled for completion by fall of 2009, said Shelly Chernicki, Caltrans spokeswoman.

Chernicki wasn’t sure how the construction would impact traffic.

“It will be up to the contractor on how to stage the work, but we won’t allow them to close the highway, our Traffic Management Center only allows certain windows,” she said.

The other two sections, one from where Trout Creek passes under the interstate to the Donner Lake Interchange, and the other from the Donner Lake Interchange to the Castle Peak rest area, are still waiting to be voted on by the commission.

The second section is budgeted for $67.5 million and probably won’t start construction until spring of 2008, and the third has not yet been programed for scheduling or funding, Chernicki said.
