I-80 project will narrow stretch of highway near Donner Lake to four lanes until October
May 19, 2011
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; An Interstate 80 project extending roughly from the Castle Peak Road exit to Donner Pass Road begins Monday, diverting traffic to the highwayand#8217;s westbound corridor and closing the Donner Lake interchange on and off ramps until October, a Caltrans spokesman said.
Crews are set, pending weather, to begin concrete replacement on the highwayand#8217;s eastbound side; the westbound side will feature two lanes each for westbound and eastbound traffic, said Caltrans Area Construction Engineer David Catania. The detour configuration will be in place until Oct. 15.
The on and off ramps at the Donner Lake interchange will remained closed until the projectand#8217;s finish, with the exception of the night of July 4, opened at request of Truckee officials for the Donner Lake fireworks, Catania said.
Catania said the narrowing of the roadway and#8212; typically a six-lane freeway with three eastbound and westbound lanes and#8212; shouldnand#8217;t cause any long delays, considering there is decreased construction on the interstate this year compared to previous years.
The project aims to ease traffic build-up from tourists slowing down to view scenery as they pass by Donner Lake, Catania said.
and#8220;… we actually have a lot of traffic due to gawking,and#8221; he said.
