I-80 west of Reno closed as winter brings heavy snow to Sierra
RENO, Nev. ” White out conditions have forced the closure of U.S. Interstate 80 west of Reno through Truckee as the most significant winter storm of the season pounds the Sierra with heavy snow and is bringing much needed rain to the valleys of western Nevada.
Forecasters say the rain in the Reno-Carson City area will change to snow later today. Several inches of snow is expected in the valleys overnight.
The Lake Tahoe region and Reno-Sparks area are under a winter storm warning through tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
The storm barreled in late Sunday, and the National Weather Service said higher elevations could receive as much as 4 feet of snow.
About a 30-mile stretch of I-80 was closed this afternoon in both directions between the California-Nevada line and Truckee, Calif.
Chains or snow tires are required on all other mountain passes, including U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit, U.S. 395 north of Reno and the Mount Rose Highway.
Travel restrictions also have been posted for Washoe Valley south of Reno.
