JV girls win 13th straight

Provided to the Sun

Not wanting to look past Incline before this weekend’s rugged road trip to Spring Creek and Lowry, the Truckee High junior varsity girls basketball team took care of business by defeating the Highlanders 33-14.

The Wolverines, winners of 13 straight, completed their second straight season with 20 wins while improving to 20-5 overall and a perfect 11-0 in league.

A much improved opponent, Incline played hard from tip to the final buzzer, but Truckee’s depth proved to be too much. A constant wave of defense, defense and more defense was the game plan for the Wolverines.

Brooke Griffin, Mollie Askin and Chelsea Cordell all took turns shutting down the Incline offense.

Balanced scoring by Truckee allowed eight of the 11 players to put up points.

Chelsea Cordell’s nine points and Brooke Griffin’s seven kept the Highlanders from stealing a game.

Solid play by Bailey Vincent, Heather Fisher and Citlali Hernandez set the tone in the first half, when Truckee took a 22-7 lead. Truckee held Incline to seven points in the second half.

Truckee’s Sam O’Connell worked hard on the boards both defensively and offensively, while Shannan Baumann, Amber Davy and Natalie Duner hounded the Highlander backcourt all game.

Super sub Aly Coronado-Smith saw limited action due of an injury but still scored.

“We are going to need her energy this weekend,” said Truckee coach Geoff Stephens. “I didn’t want to risk further injury.”
