Courtesy Ruben SanchezRick Gravesen of Alpine Meadows placed 28th in the surf contest on Wednesday and 25th overall in the Ultimate Boarder.

When the final numbers were crunched from three days of boarding competition, Aaron Astorga of Carlsbad, Calif., was named Ultimate Boarder of the inaugural tri-sport event.

Truckee’s Andy Finch narrowly missed the top-10 for the best local result, as he finished 11th overall in the field of 45.

The first-ever Ultimate Boarder contest featured 45 athletes competing in three sports ” snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding ” for a $30,000 grand prize.

Squaw Valley USA hosted the first round of competition on a slopestyle course on April 13. The contest then moved south to Ventura for the surfing and skating portions, which wrapped up on Saturday.

Final results were determined by adding up each rider’s finishes after all three rounds. The lowest scorer took home the winner’s check as well as a Soul Ryde longboard with gold Revenge Trucks embellished with custom spinner wheels, a personal home fitness training system by Redcord and an $8,000 audio system from Rockford Fosgate.

Joining Astorga on the Ultimate Boarder podium was professional snowboarder and silver medalist Todd Richards (Encinitas, Calif.) and professional skateboarder and bronze medalist Kristian Philipp of New Zealand. Richards was awarded $10,000 and Phillipp $5,000.
