San Francisco’s Kool Karlo will hit Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room for a free show on April 26. The performance will mark the disc jockey’s first show in Lake Tahoe and his second time through the area.

“I’ve been to Tahoe once before on the drive back from Burning Man last year,” Karlo said.

The mad festival in the desert aside, the DJ counts Dirty Bird and Bonobo among his more recent influences, but he’ll play just about anything, he said.

“I’ve been playing for over 15 years. I’ve spanned through a bunch of different sounds over the years,” Karlo said. “My roots are in hip-hop, house and electro. But I’ve played everything. When you DJ for that long, people’s tastes change along with my own.”

For the Tahoe show, he’s ready to throw down a classic DJ set, tuned to the audience. He’s ready to drop beats in faces.

“I like to show people that DJing isn’t just hitting space bar on a laptop, but that it’s an interactive, live, dynamic performance,” he said. “I think that’s something that’s slowly diminishing from the dance music scene.”

Though he’s not just going to queue up a list of a songs and let it fly, the DJ does know one thing about his set.

“Definitely expect some heavy bass,” he said. “I can guarantee that it’s going to get pretty bass-y.”
