TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Classical music endures through the generations, but not with the Lake Tahoe Music Festival, which this week called it quits after 29 seasons.
and#8220;Everybodyand#8217;s very sad, but it was a unanimous decision,and#8221; said Sally Lyon, the president of the festivaland#8217;s board of directors. and#8220;Times have changed, and there are a lot of free options for music these days that werenand#8217;t there 20 years ago. The competition has really changed and the environment has really changed. We felt like it was the right time to finish up. Itand#8217;s been a great program.and#8221;
In a March 5 letter from the board of directors to festival donors, Lyon pointed to the regionand#8217;s and#8220;severe economic downturnand#8221; as a reason for ceasing the event, coupled by the rise of a pair of local classical organizations and#8212; Toccata and Lake Tahoe SummerFest and#8212; leading to competition for donor dollars.
The Lake Tahoe Music Festival when it began exclusively presented classical music. It gradually added pop music, and in recent years, only about 50 percent of its shows were classical. Last year it had three showsand#8212; Blues Traveler, Michael Bolton and Colbie Caillat and#8212; at the Village at Northstar-at-Tahoe, which has since changed names to Northstar California.
The ski resort plans to present three pop shows this summer.
and#8220;At the end of the season we parted ways amicably,and#8221; said Northstar spokeswoman Jessica Van Pernis. and#8220;We would like to host our own music festival. Announcements will be in the next few weeks to a month. We donand#8217;t even have a name for it yet, but we have dates.and#8221;
Each of the shows will be on a Friday and#8212; June 22, July 6 and Aug. 17.
The Lake Tahoe Music Festival over the years held events all across the North Shore, from Donner Lake to Homewood.
It also has brought music into schools through the Truckee Tahoe Youth Music Program.
and#8220;Our intention to provide funding (to the schools program) for at least a couple of years, and to get another organization to take that over for us,and#8221; Lyon said. and#8220;We are talking with Lake Tahoe SummerFest and we may also talk with Toccata, but we donand#8217;t have anything to announce yet.and#8221;
According to is website, the festival was founded in 1982 by the conductor of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, Edgar Braun. The nonprofitand#8217;s concerts were attended each summer by as many at 12,000.
