Lake Tahoe weather: Snow, cold temps to kick off week

LAKE TAHOE and#8212; Spring snow is expected to return to the Lake Tahoe region this week as a cold front moves into the area Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A period of moderate to heavy snow and rain is likely, with snow levels beginning at 7,000 to 8,000 feet starting Monday night, dropping to 5,000 as the cold front settles, bringing low temperatures into the mid- to upper-20s.. As much as 3 to 8 inches of snow is expected at lake level from Monday night to Wednesday, NWS reports.

A lake wind advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday, bringing winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts of 35 mph expected at lake level. Waves on Lake Tahoe are expected to reach 2 to 4 feet.

By week’s end, sunny skies and temperatures in the lower-40s should return.

Tuesday Night: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 24. West northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Wednesday: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 30. West northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: Scattered snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Thursday: Scattered snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
