Learn Polateaz at Asante Lakeside Fitness in Tahoe City
Just mention pole dancing and it’s sure to spin some heads faster than you can say, “Wait ” I meant Polateaz!”
Most often associated with next-to-naked women performing erotic tricks for dollar bills under dark lights in strip clubs, this “forbidden dance” is starting to see the light of day as an acceptable fitness pursuit, one that embodies strength, stamina, grace and sexiness.
“Sexy,” which lost its status as a bad word at least a decade ago, is back. And it’s better than ever.
Amy Rosen, ACE certified group exercise and Pilates instructor, has helped Tahoe women feel sexy while shedding inches from waistlines and judgements from minds as the lead pole dancing instructor at Asante Lakeside Fitness in Tahoe City for years.
“I tell my girls that all judgements are left at the door ” of themselves and of others,” Rosen says of her popular fitness class. What results is a safe environment for women of all ages (her oldest student is 74 years old) to explore the art of pole dancing, relying heavily on core muscle development, while having fun and feeling sexy.
“I’ve taken a lot of classes,” said longtime student and mother of three Monique Long. “But this is the best class I’ve ever taken.”
Long’s experience with the class is echoed by many students.
“Most of my students are moms who need to re-gain their sense of sexiness after having children,” Rosen says. “They’re moms in Tahoe who want to get back into shape, re-claim their sex lives and have fun doing it.”
In fact, Rosen, a wife and mother of two, started learning how to pole dance after having children when she discovered her friend, Melinda Maxfield, had won a pole at a raffle. Rosen and her friend Madonna Cassini started teaching themselves the tricks of the trade on the borrowed pole. One thing led to the next and Rosen started teaching the techniques she was learning on the pole as a fitness routine at Asante complete with kicks, push ups, spins and even a floor dance routine.
As the discipline grew, Rosen’s students urged her to put her techniques on a workout video. After months of research and a few days of filming, Rosen completed her first workout DVD entitled, “Polateaz, vol. 1 and vol. 2,” which was released for sale last week.
The DVD incorporates high kicks, bends, hip rolls and dance moves done on tippy toes while using the pole as a prop. An exercise band is also incorporated into the workout for strength-building exercises.
“What I really like about this DVD is it shows a pole routine and a workout,” Rosen says. “And the workout routine you can do without buying a pole.”
While poles are between $225 – $275, the DVD comes with an exercise band used to execute a number of exercises sure to have you winded before the pole combo instruction segment of the video.
During the pole move instruction, viewers learn the sequence and basics of such moves as the Cowgirl, Vampire (a Rosen original), the Helicopter, Gazelle, Halfpipe and more.
“I can’t promise you won’t want to buy a pole after seeing the DVD,” Rosen says. “But I’ve got students who have bought the DVD and simply put the exercise band around a cat-scratch pole and it works just fine.”
