Legendary guitarist, Billy Gibbons, uses Truckee-made stereo console in his own home
TRUCKEE, Calif. – For the last half century, Billy F Gibbons, the guitarist and frontman of ZZ Top, has maintained a sound so iconic that musicians around the world regularly try to dissect and emulate it. Over the years, Gibbons has used a custom-made Magnatone amp to add more fierceness to his sound on stage. He’s used a hybrid amp with a rattan-style cane grill to create a slightly woody tone that’s anything but hollow. He’s even used equalizers to get every guitar on stage to sound like his trademark 1959 Les Paul Standard—the guitar he named, “The Pearly Gates.”
Suffice to say, Billy F Gibbons knows the power of quality sound equipment.
So when he went looking for a new stereo console, he knew that no standard solid-state amplifier setup would do the trick. He wanted something that offered richness, warmth, and an undeniable fullness in its sound. And that’s when he found Streamline HiFi.
Built on a dual-amp system that leverages both a Class A tube amp and a Class D amp, Streamline HiFi stereo consoles deliver the warmth and detail of a classic 1950’s stereo alongside the power and bass of a modern one. Each console is hand-built in Truckee, California and outfitted with both a turntable and Bluetooth capabilities.
“Wow! Listen to the detail on that,” Billy F Gibbons said the first time he heard a record play on Streamline HiFi’s Mojo console.
But the appeal of the consoles isn’t all in their sound quality. Each one is built to spec and constructed in an eye-catching mid-century modern style. The company’s founder, Steve Morris, is an experienced woodworker who prides himself on his quality materials and his attention to detail. Among the company’s three different models—Mojo, Rambler, and Crossroads—Morris uses small peek windows to offer a look at the glowing tube amps, automatic sensors to turn off the consoles’ LED lighting as soon as their lids are closed, and either California-grown English walnut or East Coast white oak to achieve multi-generational durability and one-of-a-kind looks with figured wood grain.
“It’s furniture meets high-end HiFi audio,” said Gibbons. “The speakers were designed to maximize the shape of the cabinetry, so you lose nothing.”
In founding Streamline HiFi, Steve Morris wasn’t just looking to create stereo consoles that audiophiles everywhere can appreciate—he wanted to create pieces powerful enough to strike up conversations, cut down on Netflix time and last for generations. “My goal is for these to be legacy pieces,” Morris said.
“The three models that now presently exist deserve to grace living rooms across the country,” said Billy F Gibbons. “The magnetism of the sound behind these things can’t be beat.”
Billy F Gibbons is now the proud owner of two Streamline HiFi models: one in his living room and one in his recording studio.
