Legislative leaders pay outside consultants

SACRAMENTO ” The state’s legislative leaders are paying consultants more than $450,000 to supplement their staffs.

A report by The Sacramento Bee shows Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, a Sacramento Democrat, has hired a close friend to lead an effort to root out waste in state spending.

Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, a Los Angeles Democrat, has hired a former assemblywoman and a former utility executive.

The new positions come at a time when the state is grappling with budget deficits. The legislative leaders say they hired nine consultants rather than full-time staff in an effort to cut costs in tough times.

The total pay to the consultants is $458,000 this year. None of the consulting jobs was competitively bid.
