Leslie takes helm of community college board

ROCKLIN ” Scott Leslie has been selected as the new president of the Sierra Joint Community College District board of trustees.

A 4-3 vote at Tuesday’s board meeting, held at Sierra College’s main campus in Rocklin, brought Leslie into the position held over the past year by Nancy Palmer, who nominated Leslie for the position. Tahoe-Truckee area Trustee Dave Ferrari nominated Barbara Vineyard for the presidential seat, and trustee Bill Martin spoke in support of the longtime board member.

“I’m very fond of the Woody Allen saying that 80 percent of success is showing up, and Barbara shows up,” he said. “She is highly respected by students and throughout the district.”

Palmer spoke on Leslie’s behalf, saying he would do a good job connecting with sectors outside of the college, such as the business community.

“I think Barbara is a full-time trustee here at this college, but there are other worlds out there,” Palmer said. “This college really needs to reach out to other worlds. We need someone who’s going to go out there and let them know we are here.”

Leslie’s first action as the new president was to nominate Palmer for vice president, who won by a 4-3 vote.

“I might lean on your input and your advice, as well as Barbara’s, as we move forward,” Leslie told Palmer after the vote.
