Letter to the Editor: A letter of thanks to the school district

As I sat with tears in my eyes with all the other parents, family and friends at my son Jonathan Sturtevant’s recent UC Berkeley graduation, I thought about the great support Jonathan received right here in our Truckee public schools.

My family and I have lived in Truckee for almost 20 years. I am writing this letter of thanks to the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Truckee Elementary School, Glenshire Elementary School, Sierra Mountain Middle School, Alder Creek Middle School and Truckee High School and their excellent teaching staffs for the superior education my son received.

My son Jonathan was accepted to Berkeley after his graduation from Truckee High in 2007. Because of the excellent preparation he received there, and the amazing Advanced Placement classes it provided, Jonathan was able to excel at Berkeley and just graduated with two bachelor degrees in mathematics and economics.

Jonathan was also recently accepted into and#8220;Math for Americaand#8221; where he will be teaching high school math in urban areas while achieving his masters in mathematics. and#8220;Math for Americaand#8221; is a program that encourages promising mathematicians to pursue teaching as a career instead of going into the private sector. There were more than 100 applicants in California alone and only six openings.

I am not just a bragging father here. I want to be sure to give credit where credit is due. First credit must be given to Jonathan for taking advantage of the education that has been provided to him and working so very hard; but a very close second goes to our amazing teachers who provided that education. God bless each and every teacher and support staff member who touched his life in such a profound and life-enriching manner. His accomplishments are your accomplishments and the fruits of your labor.

We have a superior public school district that provides excellent preparation for life and further education. It is something we should remember to acknowledge, honor and protect at all cost. The teachers in this community are our unsung heroes. I thank you profoundly for what you have done, not only for my son, but for all the children you have influenced in our community.
