Letter to the Editor: A proposal for downtown parking

1) Keep the existing metered system for out of town and#8220;visitors.and#8221;

2) Issue resident windshield parking decals for and#8220;locals.and#8221;

The and#8220;localsand#8221; decals, issued for a nominal fee, say $25 per year, would entitle the bearer to up to 2 hours of free parking per day in any of the metered zones.

These rules could be easily enforced using smartphone-like scanning of windshield decals.

This would keep folks from abusing the system by moving their cars to a different location in the metered zones. Variations of this idea include a sliding scale, say $10 for a one-hour a day decal or less money for a midweek or senior decal.
