Letter to the Editor: Are there options for youth in Truckee?

I would like to add to the discussion concerning a homeless shelter for our area. Most people are not aware teen runaway is not eligible to stay in such a shelter. Families or single adults may, but an and#8220;unaccompanied minorand#8221; may not.

If a young person chooses to leave home for any reason, he or she has only two choices. S/he may stay with a friend, which may pose a liability for the friendand#8217;s parents, or s/he may apply for services in Nevada City or Auburn. The second choice takes the young person out of his or her present school where the routine is familiar and friends and counselors are available. A better solution is for us to provide some place for such young people to go in our area.

Thus, I ask and#8212; what provisions can we make in our community for such troubled young people?
