Letter to the Editor: Be a trail angel

Did you know that right now there are hundreds of hardy hikers passing through our community? Thatand#8217;s right. They are known as and#8220;thru hikersand#8221; on the Pacific Crest Trail, and they are passing by Truckee on a daily basis. Most of these hikers started in April or May of this year on their trek, totaling 2,650 miles of hard hiking, from Mexico to Canada. The estimate of hikers making their way up the PCT this year is around 1,000. Wow!

Do you want to be a trail angel? Then head down the PCT at Donner Summit and#8212; you will instantly recognize the thru hikers by their full packs and dusty legs. An international group, they are all known by their trail names and#8230; such interesting monikers as Viper (Norway), Steady (a young gal from Michigan), Lumbar and Lucky (a couple from northern England), and my personal favorite, Rest Stop.

We have found that a cold apple will be very much appreciated and#8212; but any kind of fresh fruit (something they cannot easily get on the trail) is gratefully received. I brought cold beer in my pack and it was a huge hit.

Thru hikers are interesting, hard-working and dedicated people and#8212; you will find that a smile and an offer of an apple or cookie is very much appreciated. And tell them you are from Truckee and#8212; a community that welcomes them and understands their pure enjoyment of the mountains.
