Letter to the Editor: Clarification for Meals On Wheels and Senior Nutrition Program

The front page of the December 1 issue featured an article about the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments receiving $1 million in loans and donations from the town of Truckee. That’s excellent news for the senior housing facility that desperately needs refurbishing.

As a board member for Sierra Senior Services, I must make a critical clarification that explains the difference between the senior apartment complex and Sierra Senior Services.

Sierra Senior Services uses the kitchen at the Truckee Donner Senior Apartments to prepare about 24,000 meals annually for the Meals On Wheels program and the senior nutrition program. That’s the only connection. There is no other affiliation between the two entities. The apartments are operated by Cambridge Estates. Sierra Senior Services is a local nonprofit 501(c)(3) with a local board and its own budget.

We recently sent out our end-of-the-year appeal to past supporters and want to assure the community that we will not receive one single penny from that $1 million.

Sierra Senior Services needs and depends on public support to keep the much-needed Meals On Wheels/Senior Nutrition Programs afloat. Services this fiscal year are up 20 percent and will continue to grow.

Thanks to the Truckee/North Tahoe communities for feeding needy seniors. For more information, please call 530-550-7600.
