Letter to the Editor: Forum on invasive species well received
I recently attended the public forum organized by the Lake Tahoe Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinating Committee on the North Shore. The forum was held to help keep the public informed on what is happening with the AIS control and prevention program in our region.
The forum was very informative, covering both the problems with established invasive aquatic species such as the Asian Clam, and the programs in place to attempt to control the existing populations. The presenters also provided details on the Tahoe Boat Inspection Program, which is the main line of defense against the introduction of the extremely destructive zebra and quagga mussel.
One of the more remarkable points of the evening was seeing Nicole Gergans, from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, and Patrick Stone, from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, on the podium together talking about their cooperative efforts to help protect Lake Tahoe from AIS.
Together, along with Tahoe RCD and other partnering organizations, they helped launch the Tahoe Keepers program to inform non-motorized watercraft users about how to prevent the spread of AIS. These organizations have been instrumental in the success of the AIS program and their cooperation on this issue, benefits us all.
The forum really hammered home that protecting Lake Tahoe requires partnership! I hope to see more in the future.
