Letter to the Editor: Having an interest in the future of the Martis Valley
November 26, 2010
I am writing to encourage community members to attend an important meeting Wednesday, Dec. 1. The US Corps of Engineers has been evaluating Martis Dam for the past several years with an eye toward strengthening the dam for downstream flood control and water storage. The projects it is considering have potentially significant implications for Martis Valley and our region.
The corps is now holding public scoping meetings to outline the project background, information gathered to date and actions it is considering. It will also solicit public input regarding environmental issues of concern. This is an important meeting for the community as it provides us the opportunity to understand what the corps envisions before we, as a community, take a position on the project. It is also important as Stampede and Boca dams are also being evaluated for possible future modifications.
For all who have an interest in the future of the Martis Valley, I urge you attend this meeting and become informed so the voice of our region can be heard. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Truckee High School.
