Letter to the Editor: Here’s an alternative to Measure J

I am writing this to convince Truckee voters to vote no on Measure J. Every time the town of Truckee wants to build something, they want us taxpayers to pay increased taxes.

This is unfair to the taxpayers of Truckee taxpayers. You got Measure A passed for the schools, Measure C for the TFHD, and now Measure J to construct a new performing arts center and a new pool. Our taxes have been steadily increasing and I believe this must finally come to a stop, especially in these tough economic times. Tried to sell your house lately?

Have you ever thought who will really use the PA center and how much will it really be used, especially during our six month winter? In summer the kids are out of school and on vacation. Has anyone ever thought about who is going to run this facilities and who will pay them too. You are not going to make any money either.

Big acts avoid Truckee anyway – after all, we do have Reno just 30 minutes away. Look at all the concerts in the park we used to have here which have virtually disappeared.

In addition, just look around, there are so many buildings in Truckee standing empty now it is unbelievable. Reminds me of a ghost town.

An alternative would be use the left over millions of dollars you collected from us already in past measures and choose any one of the many empty buildings for remodeling. This would be cheaper than building a new one, and you have the money already anyway. No need to raise our taxes once again.

Please, Vote No on J.
