Letter to the Editor: Measure J – exactly the role for TDRPD

The mission of the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District is to enrich the lives of all in our community by providing a wide variety of quality parks, facilities, programs, and recreational opportunities.

TDRPD can meet all accountability and effectiveness questions with pride and documentation. Don Spano’s argument on Sept. 25 that government should only invest in the community to turn a profit is a fallacy. TDRPD will match the bond money and has savings and plans to cover the costs. TDRPD is forward thinking to so thoroughly consider and plan for new aquatic and performing arts centers to meet the needs and wishes of the community.

Contrary to Mr. Spano’s recent arguments against all taxes, this is a group of public servants with utmost integrity whose sole interest is advancing the well being of the community.

Consider our pool, amphitheater, River View Sports Park, Regional Park, pump track, skateboard park and recreation center. They are a remarkable and diverse set of recreational opportunities and are well used. There is no question that they greatly enhance the quality of our lives in Truckee. The community benefits greatly from facilities and programs without needing to make a profit from them.

Perhaps Mr. Spano would prefer paying resort prices for recreational experiences. I would prefer to expand our community-based offerings at affordable prices, and these two facilities can benefit people in every segment of our community. We must not lose sight of the fact that the town is people, you and me, not a business whose only interest is shareholder profits. We all profit from Measure J with a very small investment that is fixed.

Please read the bond at truckeefirst.org or tdrpd.com. Make the choice to invest here in Truckee.
