Letter to the Editor: Much potential exists with Tahoe City GC
I havenand#8217;t found anyone who could explain the point of Mike Dunsfordand#8217;s recent My Turn regarding the TCPUD purchase of the Tahoe City Golf Course. One thing is clear, however and#8212; it appears Mr. Dunsford doesnand#8217;t know anything about golf or the golf business.
When Mr. Dunsford says and#8220;the price is hard to justify when the comparable Ponderosa Golf Course in Truckee sold in 2008 for $3.12 million, an asset in far better condition and greater revenues,and#8221; it belies his lack of golf knowledge.
Take 10 and#8220;realand#8221; golfers and ask them which golf course they would play for the rest of their lives, given the choice between Ponderosa and Tahoe City GC, and all will choose Tahoe City GC. TCGC has more interesting holes, much better greens, is in better condition, has a practice area, has a clubhouse with a liquor license and a real 19th hole overlooking the 6th and 9th holes, great potential for a popular restaurant and a dedicated local following.
The handwringing over profitability that has been voiced by some of the TCPUD Board members is ridiculous. With a reasonable rate structure and efficient, effective management by competent golf course managers, TCGC would turn into a gold mine for any purchaser. My only hope is that it doesnand#8217;t get paved over and made into a parking lot or a Frisbee course or a swimming pool or a dog park.
Oh, and one more thing argues for a higher valuation for TCGC than Ponderosa and#8212; that is Lake Tahoe.
