Letter to the Editor: Please be careful with using rodent killer and#8212; our pets would appreciate it

The picture shows our dog Duley, who two weeks ago was bounding through the Camas Lillies on the Sage Hen Creek trail. Today Duley is dead because he was poisoned.

This shelter dog came to our family only two years ago and infused us all with his joy for life. He always seemed so grateful for being rescued; willing to do anything, go anywhere, just to be with us.

The vet believes Duley was poisoned because he ate common rodent killer. This insidious poison is an anti-coagulant, and although he was given an antidote, they could not stop the internal bleeding that eventually took Duley’s life.

It is our hope that if you need to exterminate rodents, put the poison in a place where man’s best friend cannot access it. The alluring smell and benign taste is for pests, not pets.

We are left with an overwhelming sadness and just a photo to remember that living a life that is joyous and loving unconditionally is a lesson for us all.
