Letter to the Editor: Re-elect Judge Tom Anderson

Voters in Nevada County should be aware of a little-known law in California when they vote for judge on June 5. That law is section 170.6 of the Code of Civil Procedure. It allows a criminal defendant to disqualify one judge from hearing his or her case without giving any reason. When any candidate for judge tells voters that he will be tough on criminal defendants, you may rest assured that that person will likely be disqualified by most if not all criminal defendants should he be elected. Defendants and victims both have a right to expect a judge to be fair.

Judges should be tough when a case deserves it, but they also have to consider all relevant circumstances in each case before using the power we entrust to them even if they occasionally have to make an unpopular decision.

Judge Tom Anderson understands this obligation and follows it. That is why we are supporting him for re-election June 5.
