Letter to the Editor: Shop at and#8212; and thank and#8212; our local businesses
and#8220;Then the Grinch thought of something he hadnand#8217;t before. Maybe Christmas, he thought … doesnand#8217;t come from a store.and#8221;
Or does it?
At this time of year, we tend to open our hearts to those less fortunate. Many of us are able to look back upon the year, and while it may not have been the best of years, we are still far more fortunate than others.
My wife and I have lived in Truckee for six years now. We both consider ourselves fortunate, and we are amazed at the sheer number of nonprofit organizations, whose main function is to make life better for those around them.
I have often heard it mentioned that merchants up here are more expensive than in Reno. Sure that is true, but Iand#8217;m asking readers to consider how very much a number of them get back to their community. Iand#8217;m a member of a service club here in town and I know for a fact that we often ask merchants to donate items, meals, or services for our various fundraising events; and every other group in town who is trying to raise money does the same thing.
I guess it would be prejudicial to single out any one of them, but there a few I would really like to ring the bell for. I can tell you there are a number of them who give a significant portion of their profits back to us. Anyone involved in fundraising in the Truckee Tahoe area knows who these merchants are.
Iand#8217;m asking you to do two things this holiday season. First, spend some of those dollars here at home instead of buying the ornament or gift down in Reno and#8212; buy it up here. Go out to dinner up here and#8212; foodand#8217;s better anyway. Secondly, and most importantly, when you are in one of our stores or restaurants, take a moment to thank these individuals for all that they do for all of us. Search out the owner of the business and tell them you are shopping there specifically because of all they do for others. If they were to post on their windows all of the organizations that they have supported during the year, you would be amazed; but they donand#8217;t and#8212; they just do it.
Our and#8220;local merchantsand#8221; are what make this community what it is. Without them, you could go into Walmart, Home Depot, Target or some other big-box store and ask them to donate to your various causes and#8212; lots of luck.
