Letter to the Editor: Stampede dam upgrade a waste of taxpayer money

Our federal government is about to throw away another $85 million (contractorand#8217;s estimate) by modifying Stampede dam to survive a 250,000-year flood event. Already able to withstand a 75,000-year event, one has to wonder who comes up with such illogical and wasteful ideas.

The plan doesnand#8217;t look at the fact that the lake will be filled up with silt in about 250 years or that glacial events occur about every 40,000 years. No, this is just a way to throw money away that we donand#8217;t have.

By the way, you will have to pay interest on the money we borrow to complete this totally unneeded project. You can only imagine the millions of dollars already thrown away at this project in the planning. Please write to Sens. Harry Reid and Barbara Boxer and Congressman Tom McClintock and tell them that if they want to throw money away at least they could pave a road, patch a pothole, make a trail or teach a child to read.
