Letter to the Editor: Vote ‘yes’ on Measure J
Of the many issues facing voters this election season, none is likely to deliver greater benefit to Truckee residents than Measure J, the initiative to build a new performing arts center and aquatic center at the new Recreation Center site. At an annual cost of $6.91 per $100,000 of assessed property value, this is a rare community investment opportunity that will address many currently unmet needs.
These amenities will improve our quality of life by providing year-round, indoor recreation, wellness and arts to everyone in our community. An independent survey conducted last summer showed strong support for both of these facilities. The performing arts center will provide a venue for both local and regional acts in music, dance and drama. The aquatic center will replace the 40-year-old community pool which has reached the end of its life span and provide expanded programming and wellness opportunities for many people young and old who are not well served by existing facilities.
A professional study forecasted an approximately $2 million annual impact for our local economy, a benefit that can’t be overlooked particularly during such a difficult period.
Some would suggest that we shouldn’t invest in our community during these challenging economic times. I would argue that now is exactly the time. We can build upon the $7 million in savings the TDRPD has made available through their meticulous management during construction of the Recreation Center and take advantage of historically low construction costs and interest rates. Economic conditions aren’t robust, but the time is right to invest in our own community.
In making this investment we can help ensure a vibrant future for our community by providing opportunities for all our citizens.
Please join me in voting yes on Measure J in November.
