Philanthropic educational organization: Chapter XE Truckee

Little is known about our organization P.E.O., Chapter XE in Truckee, yet our Chapter has been here since 1997 under the leadership of many local women.

Philanthropic Educational Organization, otherwise known as P.E.O., was founded in 1869 by seven women in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  For over 150 years, women in the United States and Canada have been raising money to help women’s education all over the world through loans, scholarships and a sisterhood of support.

What started as a bond of friendship among seven women, is now one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America with over 6,000 chapters in cities and town across the U.S. and Canada, with well over 500,000 members.

Members are passionate about P.E.O.’s mission: to celebrate the advancement of women; help educate women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans.

P.E.O. started and stewards our own Cottey Women’s College in Missouri. All these programs and goals are aimed at supporting, encouraging and motivating women to achieve their highest aspirations.

P.E.O. is a non-profit organization that has helped more than 150,000 women pursue their educational goals by providing over $321 million in educational assistance, making a difference in women’s lives through six international philanthropies, a foundation, state philanthropies and local scholarships.

Chapter XE in Truckee currently supports five local scholarships for Tahoe Truckee graduates annually, who meet the criteria for these scholarships.   Like many other local organizations, we plan lots of ways to raise money to support not only our local scholarships, but also our state and international philanthropies.  We support an Educational Loan Fund, the International Peace Scholarship, a program for Continuing Education Grants for women returning to school to continue their education.  We support a STAR scholarship for high school women.  We also help support Cottey College, a nationally ranked, fully accredited, independent, college for women with a variety of studies so that it may continue to provide an affordable education for women.

Consider supporting one of our fundraisers.  Our annual “Babes on the Bus” is going to Napa on May 17. A fun filled day in which you and your friends board a bus to Napa and leave the driving to us!    We’re also having our annual garage sale on June 21 in Truckee so be on the lookout for our announcements about these upcoming events.

We know there are many great organizations in Truckee supporting each other with friendship and community involvement.

If you or someone you know, might benefit from one of our educational loans or scholarships or are interested in joining our Chapter in Truckee or would like to fund out more about our fundraising events, please reach out!

Thank you,

Dear Editor:

I am in the placer county section of Truckee and I do not want to become part of this north tahoe town. Please do not make those of us who live in Truckee change towns!

Dear Editor:

Enjoyed Gordon Shaw’s article on Managing Tahoe Traffic. I also recently read that ridership from the TC travel center to Palisades has grown from hundreds to ten thousands. I want to make some comments so that this number continues to grow, and not reverse. First, the bus need to have exterior ski and snowboard racks to safely accommodate more passengers and speed the boarding process. Second, the bus should not be dropping skiers off at the perimeter, but should drop off skiers at the drop off loop. Third, separate routes to Alpine should be scheduled, at least on parking restriction days. I’d also like to suggest bus priority on the highway, but I know that virtually impossible.

The bus is really not that bad a mode of transportation but I’d prefer to drive for the much greater convenience. However, if the experience were better, I’d almost prefer the bus. I hope TART continues to make appropriate investments.

Dear editor,

I am writing about wanting to make surrons (electric dirtbirt) legal. Surrons are very fun and fast but make no noise and don’t disturb people like dirtbikes do. Also surrons are more safe than dirtbikes because they are easier to ride. I think this would be a worthy debate for the community.

Thank for your time,
Charlie, 7th Grader
