Letters: Zabriskie should be re-elected; Vote yes on V (Opinion)

Zabriskie should be re-elected to Town Council

To the Editor:

This letter is being written in support of Jan Zabriskie, who is my neighbor and a candidate for re-election to the Town Council. I have had the distinct honor and pleasure of spending the last year working with Jan on a neighborhood committee to gain Firewise USA Recognition in Prosser Lakeview Estates, where I live.

We are close to submitting our application as we put the final touches on our action plan for reducing wildfire risks in our neighborhood. This plan is being prepared with the assistance of local fire officials under the Firewise guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association. Our incredible neighborhood has been actively working on fuel reduction and home hardening efforts to make Prosser Lakeview Estates safe and establish our neighborhood as a Firewise community.

As a member of this committee, Jan Zabriskie has devoted the past year toward this effort.  He is dedicated to protecting our community and his involvement in our efforts to bring Firewise to Prosser Lakeview Estates is one of many ways he shows his commitment to our Town. Please join me in voting to re-elect Jan for Truckee Town Council. He deserves our vote this November.

Protect Nevada County, vote yes on V

To the Editor:

Please join me in voting yes on Measure V. Protect Nevada County from the ravages of wildfire.

Now is the time to do everything we can to minimize the risk wildfire poses to life and property in Nevada County. Estimated to raise $12,000,000 a year, Measure V provides locally controlled funding that can be used to match Cal Fire and FEMA grant money, potentially leveraging millions more to fund additional fire protection programs.

Opponents to Measure V say now is not the time for fire protection, and that Measure V damages our local economy. I say, when it comes to protecting life and property, let’s not be penny-wise and pound foolish; if now is not the time, let us hope that now is not too late.

I have been a Realtor in Nevada County for the past 43 years. The loss of quality of life and the collective wealth (real estate values) that would result from catastrophic wildfire would be immeasurable. The loss of County property tax revenues alone could easily FAR exceed

the cost of a 1/2% sales tax!

Let’s be proactive in working to protect our county from the ravages of wildfire.

Vote Yes on Measure V,

Charles Brock, Nevada City
