Local angler catches big ‘bow from Tahoe

Truckee resident Don Gravano caught an 8 1/2-pound, 30-inch rainbow trout from Lake Tahoe this past Sunday.
Gravano, who won last year’s rainbow trout division of Jake’s Fishing Derby with a 6-pound, 12-ouncer, was trolling with a black and gold floating Rapala near the Coast Guard launch ramp.
An avid angler, Gravano, 63, said he fishes all the local lakes but prefers Tahoe because of the quality and quantity of the fish. He also targets mackinaw and kokanee.
He’s had his share of luck.
Trolling Thursday on Lake Tahoe, Gravano caught four fish, including a 4-pound rainbow, two 3-pound rainbow and a kokanee.
His 8 1/2-pound rainbow ” the largest he’s ever caught ” is currently in the hands of a taxidermist being mounted. Gravano said the largest mackinaw he’s pulled in weighed 18 pounds.
