Local hockey team on a roll

The Tahoe Wolf Pack hockey team remains undefeated after a 5-2 win over the Thrashers at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena on Tuesday.

The Wolf Pack ” made up of players from North Tahoe and Reno ” improved to 10-0-1 on the season, while the second-seeded Thrashers fell to 6-4-1.

Don Hartzell scored two goals for the Wolf Pack, and Brett Hurst, Tom O’Neal and Conner Alexander contributed one goal apiece to the winning effort. Team captain Dave Zwick chipped in two assists and Doug Gore had one assist for the Wolf Pack.

Curtis Crandell scored both goals for the Thrashers, the first of which came with 16:29 left in the opening period.

The game pace was fast, with many shots on net for both teams. O’Neal tied the score with 4:11 left in the first period on a spectacular one-timer from the point. Crandell then scored again with 16:32 left in the second period to give the Thrashers a 2-1 lead.

The Wolf Pack regrouped and stayed calm.

Zwick fed Hartzell for a score with 11:21 left in the second period to tie the score. Late in the second, Doug Gore had a nice feed to Hurst for a go-ahead wrist shot.

The Zwick-Hartzell combo worked once again with 15:01 left in the third, as Hartzell nailed a tip-in for a 4-2 lead.

With 4:01 remaining in the contest, Alexander nailed the coffin shut with a slick wrister from the blue line, giving the Wolf Pack another win and a lock on first place as they head into next week’s playoffs.

Entering playoffs, Zwick said he and his teammates know from past experience that any given team may beat the best on any given day.
