Local preps selected to play in Sertoma Football Classic

A half dozen graduating seniors between the North Tahoe and Truckee high football teams were selected to play in the 27th annual Sertoma Football Classic.

The game, which showcases the top 100 senior players from 2A, 3A and 4A programs in Northern Nevada, will be held at UNR’s Mackay Stadium on Friday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m.

Truckee players include Nick Tennant, J.D. Wright, Paris Tenorio, Evan Hyland and Kevin Wood, while Joe Erman will be the lone representative from North Tahoe.

All are members of the Silver Team, to be coached by Dan Avansino of Reno High. Their opponent, the Blue Team, will be led by Yerington’s Cody Neville.

Although five Wolverines were named to the Silver Team, only two (Tennant and Wood) plan to compete in the game, said Truckee head football coach Bob Shaffer. Tenorio will be visiting San Mateo Junior College while Hyland and Wood will be on a senior trip.

Tennant is a defensive back and tight end, and Wood played center and defensive tackle.

Erman, a three-year varsity starter, played a huge role for the Lakers at fullback and linebacker.
